A $14 Billion ‘Singles Day’ Sets New Records
Singles Day, the Chinese holiday celebrated every year on November 11, just shattered records as the single largest shopping day in history. In a 24 hour period customers of the Chinese e-commerce giant, Alibaba, made $14.3 billion worth of purchases – jumping 60 percent from the $9.3 billion record set last year. Alibaba first popularized Singles Day as a major shopping holiday in 2009. It’s a day when young, single Chinese people celebrate their independence and treat themselves to gifts. It takes place on November 11 every year because of the significance of the date and the number one. Six years after launching its first 11.11 Global Shopping festival, Alibaba continues to grow the shopping day within China and internationally. More than 30,000 brands from 25 countries participated this year with merchants selling directly to consumers in more than 200 countries and regions. The 11.11 shopping festival has become a landmark event not just for the records it sets, but as a day where Alibaba can showcase e-commerce innovations that help support such a massive volume of purchases. These innovations – in areas as diverse as logistics, mobile and omni-channel experiences – help move the entire industry forward and Newgistics is proud to be a part of Alibaba’s effort. We’re already looking forward to next year – Happy Singles Day!
