Believe it or not, Mother’s Day is right around the corner. It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating the New Year and now, sons and daughters around the country are gearing up to show the special lady (or ladies) in their lives just how special they really are. While breakfast in bed is a thoughtful gesture, most shoppers also choose to buy gifts to enhance Mom’s day as much as possible.
With this in mind, the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights conducted a survey to see how shoppers are choosing to purchase gifts for Mother’s Day this year. The results found that:
- 30% of US shoppers plan to purchase gifts online this year, a 3% increase from 2016 and a 5% increase from 2015.
- Total spending for Mother’s Day is projected to reach $23.6 billion – up from $21.4 billion in 2016 – a 10.6% increase.
- Mobile device usage is projected to be popular for shopping as well, with 34% of consumers (that have smartphones) projected to research gift ideas via their mobile devices, and 19% projected to use devices to buy gifts.
